A new Yara-Carus partnership to solve the toxic gases emissions in wastewater treatment |
Oslo (2007-05-29): Yara and Carus Corporation have signed a distribution agreement for Econox agent® , Carus’ sodium permanganate product covering selected European countries. This offer completes Yara’s existing Nutriox® preventive solution to address the toxic gases - emission problems in sewage networks, with a more comprehensive portfolio of products, thereby creating a full-service odor treatment offer for municipalities and industries.
In oxidizing and then preventing Hydrogen sulphide (H2S) emissions, the two products complement each other very well. H2S is a very toxic, odorous, and corrosive gas formed in wastewater systems. It represents an unacceptable smell and a significant health risk causing, in case of high exposure, a loss of smell, eye irritation, rhinitis and respiratory difficulties amongst other symptoms.
Carus is the world’s leader in permanganate technology. In 2003, Carus developed ECONOX® , a sodium permanganate solution for wastewater treatment in the USA. ECONOX® chemically eliminates H2S and mercaptans responsible for odors in wastewater systems, especially in sludge treatment. ECONOX® will now be brought to European municipalities, sewage networks and industries that need to treat not only H2S but also mercaptans. Marie Marcenac, Vice-President for Carus International, sees this agreement as “a synergy to offer a more comprehensive service to customers.”
Yara has developed Nutriox® , an innocuous product that works biologically to prevent the formation of H2S. It offers a controlled treatment with a special quality calcium nitrate solution. Yara also provides consultancy services including assessment, diagnosis, installation, optimization and online maintenance at client sites. “Our idea is to bring to the market a one shop stop offer of products integrated to our existing full-service approach”, says Luc Ferréol, Sales and Marketing Director for ESP Nitrates at Yara.
Yara thus becomes a specialist in the treatment of toxic gas and odors for wastewater treatment networks, an expanding market as urbanization and demographic changes across the world pose serious waste management issues that threaten the environment, health and life quality.

CalciQuest, Inc. has successfully built over the past 15 years.
Paul Carus, President of the new Carus Phosphates, Inc., expressed great optimism for
the future of Carus Phosphates, Inc., based on planned marketing efforts to grow the

expanded customer and sales service, and the benefit of two strategically positioned

In acquiring the businesses from CalciQuest, Inc., Carus is also acquiring a polymer

of chemicals used in the drinking water industry,” said Bill Mersch, General Manager of
Carus Phosphates, Inc.
